Personal comments:  Lovely clean soft play area for the children, and coffee for the adults.  There are closer soft play areas in Liskeard, but we tend to use this one or Drakes Den in Plymouth (PL6 7PS).

Personal comments:  The donkey park is great fun for all the family.  They have a good selection of animals for everyone to feed, from goats, chickens, pigs, rabbits and gerbils just to name a few.  The have a nice indoor soft play area for younger children, offer donkey rides and there’s outdoor space so you can eat your packed lunch.

Bodmin Moor Bridge

Delphi Bridge.

St Breward,

Bodmin Moor,

PL30 4NL

Ages: All

Cost: Free

Personal comments:  Delphi Bridge is a beautiful setting for a picnic.  Children play in the shallow river and enjoy the day playing, making friends with other children.  Over the years this is becoming more popular with tourists, but it’s definitely worth a visit on a nice sunny day.  This is one of my favourite places spending time as a family.  The best drive for me is to take the A38 towards Bodmin, go past Trago Mills on your left, then turn right towards St Neot.  Do feel free to contact me if you need help with directions.

Cost: ££ to £££

Personal comments: For those interested in theme park rides, brave when it comes to heights, this may be for you.  A full day out for the family.  Not a favourite of mine due to the height factor, but the children love it.

Ages: All

Cost: ££ to £££

Personal comments: Another great day out for the family.  It’s not the largest zoo in the South West, but still worth a visit.  For those wanting a larger zoo, have a look at Paignton Zoo, both are run by the same company.

Cornwall Underground.

Hayle,
TR27 5JE

www.cornwallunderground.co.uk

Ages: 10yrs +

Cost: £££

Personal comments: This activity is expensive, but it is very informative and educational, therefore worth every in my opinion.  It’s not every day you get to experience inside an old mine shaft, learn about the history and the heritage of Cornish mining, along with the mineral extraction process.  With all future power coming from electrification, and storage in form of batteries, it won’t be long until mining restarts in Cornwall and possible other parts of the UK.

Feeding the Duck Launceston

Feeding Wild Ducks.

Saint Thomas Road,

Launceston,

PL15 8BU

Ages: All

Cost:  Free

Personal comments: Feeding the wild ducks is a lovely experience for all.  These ducks are wild, but they have a lot of trust in us humans.  Take a cheap loft of bread and spend an hour feeding them.  If you all sit still and quietly, they will take it from your hand; I’ve been able to get them eat out off my lap with the children sitting next to me.  Again, only the locals know about these ducks which is why they are so tame.  Park outside the church on the left-hand side and enjoy with the family.  Why not take your own lunch?

Crabbing.

Looe Harbour

PL13 1DT

Ages: All

Cost: Free

Personal comments: Crabbing at the local harbour can be great fun.  It’s free to crab, but you may need to buy a bucket, a crabbing net and bait.  Crabs will eat anything for bait, i find smoked bacon works quite well, and it is often cheaper than buying bait in Looe.

Do remember to keep watch of your children, it can be a big drop depending on tide times, and water currents are often unforgiving.  I do tend to leave crabbing with an extra grey hair or two.  Neither the less, it’s great fun and children love it.

Personal comments: This pool is 20mins from the cottage.  The reason I have selected this pool is for numerous reasons; it is clean and suitable for all ages.  All ages can use the slide, and the staff are always super friendly, perfect for families.  We travel to this pool all the time because the children love it.

PL31 2NR

Ages: 8+

Cost: ££

Personal comments: Bodmin jail offers a great experience to all.  The ‘Dark Wall Feature’ has a good rapport, and again in my opinion well worth a visit.  It’s quite a chilling thought being able to see, sense, and feel the final room of an inmate, where the hanging pit is located.

Tavistock Road

Personal comments: Set away from the actual prison, the museum is a good educational tool for allowing children and adults to learn.  I think it’s well worth a visit if in the area.  It’s not far from Tavistock, and you can see parts of Dartmoor at the same.

Personal comments: Wander through the woods to find Cotehele Mill beside the Morden stream to discover an atmospheric reminder of the recent past when corn was ground at the mill for the local community.  Cotehele house is only around the corner too.

Personal comments: Lanhydrock is a magnificent late Victorian Country House with gardens and woodland to explore.  It is a full day out for all those wishing to visit, and again it’s highly recommended.  Remember to take lunch, you’ll be able to sit and relax on the lawns.  Lanhydrock holds events all year round, so it’s worth looking on their website to see if they have anything on.
